ICL - Used for every image depicting ice on land from an ice storm.
ICW - Used for every image depicting ice on water such as ice bergs,
ice shelves, etc.

SVR - Used for every image depicting severe thunderstorms whether they
produce tornadoes or not.
TOR - No longer in use.
Previously used for images
depicting tornadic thunderstorms. The question of whether or not the storm
officially produced a tornado is something that is decided after the storm
passes. Because this might have lead to inconsitencies in labeling, the
prefix TOR was retired.

SNW - Used for every image depicting snow cover.

STM - Used for every image depicting large(synoptic)-scale low pressure
systems. This tag previously included thunderstorm complexes but those images have
been moved to the SVR classification.

TRC - Used for every image depicting warm-core tropical systems including
hurricanes, typhoons and developing systems.

Volcanic
|
Unique

|
VIR - Used for every image depicting heat signatures (hot spots) from
volcanic activity.
VSH - Used for every image depicting ash clouds resulting from the
eruption of a volcano.
VOL - No longer in use.
Previously used for images depicting any kind of volcanic activity.
Classifications changed to be more specific.

UNI - Used for every image depicting an event which is not classifiable
under any event directory or for images depicting many events which are not
related to one central event.

TOMS-EP

Channel Differencing
|
|
TOMS - Used for every Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer -
Earth Probe plot. Because of the various phenomena the TOMS can detect,
these images can be found in the "Dust", "Fires" and "Volcano"
directories.

DIF - Used for every image in which the "split-window" channel
differencing technique was employed to highlight the event. Because
this technique enhances the appearance of airborne silicates, this
imagery can be found in the "Dust" and "Volcano" directories.
